How to Keep Your Heart Open with God During Hard Times in Life
How has life been for YOU lately??
For me, it has included grief counseling and support groups, painting as worship, coloring for fun, quality family time, church, outgrowing old mindsets, and expanding the DeKelis Art brand.
Here's a little vulnerable update and encouragement.
Usually, I love to plan ahead to stay prepared and avoid negative outcomes. I know, I know—I'm working through my control issues 😅. However, the past 15 months have rocked my world in ways I never thought to prepare for.
Losing my mom was just a heavy fraction of what my household and I have experienced. To name a few, I almost coded in a doctor's office, had three major surgeries, financial hits, a stalling business...and yes, there's more.
There were days when I asked, "God, what are you doing and why?"
There were days I had no hope or faith left to see things turn around.
There are still days when I wonder, "Lord, what in the world do you see in me that qualifies me for these battles?"
On the flip side, there were days I saw God moving in real time to favor our family and loved ones.
There were days when I literally felt a "second wind" rush through me and lift me up so I could keep going.
Recently, my friend said, "Girl, you look good! You don't even look like what you've been through!"
Compared to how I struggled in my past, I'm beyond amazed that I'm still standing.
💚 Lately, I recognize how emotionally stronger I am. I see my significant growth mentally and spiritually. Yet, I'm positive I would have missed these green flags had I not faced so many battles.
The only credit I can give myself is that I kept my heart and palms open. Your girl has weathered some storms, and Jesus held my hand with every step.
He sent me "love notes" in the form of unexpected messages, gifts, cards, texts, calls, visits, medical professionals, videos, sermons, and posts that reminded me I was worthy and seen. I kept discovering little ways to lean on Him.
All I had to do was continue to leave the door open for God to do whatever He knew was necessary, and then He took care of the rest. This was the season that my faith was shaken, but my trust in God was strengthened—a trust that accepts He knows best and has everything under control. He is well prepared because He knows everything.

When you're at your lowest, in the deep end, and struggling to find something to hold on to, do not feel like you have to do "the most" when it comes to God. There's a season for everything.
Your quiet, simple prayers are just as monumental as your loud, confident prayers. Your tears in mourning are just as important as your tears in joy. You don't need all the right words or any at all. Just keep the door to your heart open for God, if even just a little with your mustard seed of faith.
You can even whisper, "God, please help," and he'll understand every detail and weight of that request. He will show up for you. Keep your eyes open. Surrender your control, desires, manifestations, dreams, and head knowledge to God. In return, He will give you more than you thought you wanted, and everything you actually need.
Allow God to rewrite the story of your present, past, and future. Let Him rewrite the story of your heart.
God is waiting. God is listening. God is healing you in ways you never imagined. He has prepared brighter days for you, and He is showing up for you right in this moment. I pray you are able to see it and feel it. He's got you.
